I like that and feel that as a lifelong aviation enthusiast this poem is a good choice.

Ode to My Hero by David A. Morris

For years I watched you airbrush contrails against
the vail of endless blue.
In admiration from airport terminals I followed your footsteps
wishing I could be just like you. - For years I watched you traverse the sky's clouded wake, just soaring by,
Waving as you went out of sight, wishing that I could fly. -
I often met you face to face but didn't quite know what to say,
for fear of embarrassment, I quietly went on my way. -
I want so much to be like you, to have that common ground we'll
share,
To be windswept along side my hero, with the whisper of the air. -

This is to let you all know that, as I did last year, I'll be doing an celebratory post including linking to friends who join in the fun with a post of their own.

National Poetry Day with the theme Work.

This poem celebrates the time at the end of the harvest and the hard work done by all those working on the land. It is heading towards winter, and the crops are safely gathered in and the cycle of seasons and work are about to begin again.

Old Thanksgiving Rhyme - author unknown

The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.

Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway -
Thanksgiving comes again!

Following the pointless excercise of having accepted an invitation to join a group blog that was deleted a few days later I began to think that perhaps it was time to call it a day here.

I'm glad that I didn't as earlier in the week I came across the group blog britishwildlife which I've joined.

If, like me, you're interested in wildlife here in the UK then I'm sure that you'll find this blog interesting and informative.

Anyway here it is...

a) List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.

1. I'm a lifelong aviation enthusiast who doesn't like flying!
2. When I chose the name FlightBuff for my first blog I googled it and found to my surprise that there were no results.
3. I can dance quite well but do not like dancing.
4.I'm always reading at least four books at any one time.
5.I've always been a bit of a minimalist.
6. I've stroked a fully grown tiger that was sedated. It's fur was surprisingly rough and it's paws bigger than my hands.
7. I have no birth marks, scars, tattoos or body piercings.

b) Tag seven people to do the same.
This I'm not going to do.

This weekend...

is The RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch.

I've enjoyed doing this the past few years, although I've not actually seen many birds, or any of real interest. Perhaps I'll even get to see one, or more, of these which we sometimes hear but very rarely see !

This year I shall be doing it from the allotment site on Sunday morning. Thankfully the weather forecast is looking reasonable for here in London.

If you enjoy getting out in the countryside then have a look at When to Watch Wildlife. I think that it's an excellent site full of useful information for any time of the year.

My favourite animal

is the magnificent Snow Leopard.

Friday evening I watched Natural World Snow Leopard:Beyond the myth on BBC2 TV and marvelled at how this big cat lives in such a hostile environment. If you missed the programme and want to watch it please note that it's being repeated later today on BBC2 at 4.55pm.

My PC desktop background is usually of an aeroplane but at the moment it's this wonderful creature.

So what's your favourite animal ?

Christmas cards

I only give, or send, less than twenty Christmas cards to family, friends and others. I bought them today in the local Cancer Research UK shop.

The back of the card packs inform me that All net profit from the sale of this pack is covenanted to Cancer Research UK, and that the cards are produced in the UK.

I shall dispose of the cards that I receive as I did last year by taking part in the excellent Christmas Card Recycling Scheme.

The real me

Reading EllieGant's Dead Common entry in which she had googled her blog and real names reminded me that I've not done that for a while.

It's something that I think we probably all do from time to time, and I'm sure that we find the results interesting.

My original blog name FlightBuff was chosen to reflect my lifelong interest in aviation. When I first googled it three years ago I was surprised that it came up with no results. Nowadays because the blog is inactive there are only about 1,660 results, all of which I presume relate to me.

Flighty generates just under 100,000 hits, but I can see, and know, that many of them are certainly not about me. This blog name, MrFlighty, results in a far more modest 5,700 hits, most of which I would guess are probably about me.

As to my real name that produces 356,000 results. I find that I'm a jazz singer like Ellie, a professional road cycle racer, a congressman and, the one I like best, a futurist in residence at a notable American newspaper.

As to whether the real me is among all those thousands of entries I don't know, and really don't care enough to be bothered to try and find out.

Call me cynical...

Shortly after posting my entry It wasn't the children ! yesterday I received an email from the school's head teacher.

He says something rather different to what his colleague told me on Tuesday, and what two plot holders saw happen on the day !

I'm not going to detail what he said but call me cynical as I'm guessing that he doesn't want to involve Barclays and possibly jeopardise any support that it gives the school.

Anyway he's made a very generous gesture and offered me £50 of garden centre tokens.

I've accepted, and said that on receipt of them I'll consider the matter closed.
