I'm now a crew member...

by MrFlighty @ Tuesday, 08. Jul, 2008 - 15:32:30

of  The Black Pearl having just accepted an invitation to join!

I do so on the proviso that I'm not made the cook or have to go topside to sort out the rigging or sails!

I may not do (m)any posts there but I'll read those done by other crew members and certainly comment here and there, when off-watch of course!

Heavens! You are flexible Mr F. Does your part of the boat house wings?

I have to say that I'm as good a sailor as I am flyer! I'd love to be on one of the big tall ships under full sail, providing it wasn't in the crow's nest! xx

I have been on a sail ship, the old Onedin Line variety. It was used for that series. I hold my hands up to truth though. It was tied up and berthed near Southsea at the time I went on board.

I have also been on board a small sail boat, I admit to that one having its moments out in choppy waters when I was on it. I was glad of the life jacket.

Finally, I am happier, if on small boats, in those with outboard motors. I can, if needed, take the tiller. I much prefer bigger boats like ferries. I have even tolerated being in one of those in a raging storm. that is not something to be recommended.

I've been on the world's biggest tall ship, the Sedov,

when moored in the Pool of London and Falmouth. It was very impressive but I've never seen any under sail sadly!
I've been sailing a few times in small yachts, albeit a long time ago, and on lots of ferries, mostly cross channel, in all sorts of weather!

The article on The Sedov is interesting and doesn't she look beautiful under full sail!

I went on board the Aurora in St Petersburg. An entirely different sort of boat This is the boat the fired the first shot of the revolution if my memory serves me correctly. It is open to visitors, except below decks because it is used as a training ship.

It is, and she does indeed!
Very different but just as impressive! Your memory does serve you correctly. xx

The visit to the Aurora was very distinctive. First, there was a corner with photo memorabilia of presidents and prime ministers who had visited, with a notch even, for Margaret Thatcher.

Second, there were two guides on board, one with a private party who was diplomatically left to his functional task, and the other, a Russian who was officially on board for visitors, who had brilliant English and was able to bring the Aurora and all its memorabilia alive when I asked him questions. He was good on recent stuff too. He was delighted to have his opinion sought and his knowledge respected.
