It wasn't the children !

by MrFlighty @ Thursday, 29. Nov, 2007 - 16:32:18

I'd like to thank everyone who commented on Not a good day ! entries here and there.

This morning I spent a few hours tidying up the damage to my plot but as you'll appreciate I wasn't quite my usual happy self, despite the welcome sunshine and a chirpy robin.

I've learnt that it wasn't the children who caused the damage but some mindless, uncaring so-called adults!

Monday morning I got an email from the guy at the council who deals with day-to-day allotment matters saying that he'd contacted the school and would email me again when they responded. He did that on Tuesday morning and whilst I was reading the email the phone rang. It was the council guy saying that if I went to the allotment then I could talk to the guy from the school.

I did that and walking round with him it was clear that the damage had not been caused by children. Not only had over 20 wooden railway sleepers,  a big heap of topsoil and possibly the shed panels been put on my plot but then the people moving it all had trampled over my plot to do so.

That was done by some of the 18 Barclays Bank volunteers who were there ! I asked if they had been properly briefed or supervised. His reply indicated not !

He then said that once I bought replacement plants and seeds if I let him know the cost then he'd see about possible reimbursement ! I said that I found that derisory and walked off before I said what I really thought. I'm still waiting on a reply to an email I sent him on Tuesday reiterating my anger and concerns.

I must say the council guy was brilliant with both his emails and phone call. Also, as a nice gesture, he later advised that my next allotment invoice would be cancelled so that I could spend the money on some more seeds.

Anyway the plot is now looking almost as good as it was before it happened, and I'm feeling a bit happier.

Oh yes, is anyone wondering if I bank at Barclays ? No thankfully  !

I should have waited until this evening to do this entry as I've just had an email from the school's head teacher which tells a different story! You'll have to wait until the weekend for the next entry in this saga to find what he says!

Uh oh - now I feel bad maligning children everywhere! But what were Barclays Volunteers supposed to be doing there? When I lived in Edgware, they occasionally persuaded some offenders to do a clear up as part of their community service, but they weren't very good or careful. Well done the Council, anyway, for responding.

As you can see by my comment above the saga continues!
The bank does things like that as a good local community public relations exercise.
I have to say that the council's allotment guy has been helpful from the outset of me getting the plot. I only wish I could say the same about my dealings with other departments!

I think their PR exercise may have backfired!

In a way, it seems worse that the damage was done by adults, as they should know better! But I am glad that the complaints you have put in have got some results at least.

That wouldn't be the first time apparently!
Yes I agree far worse. The head teacher has made a generous gesture which I'll accept and then consider the matter closed. That suits me as I dislike such things dragging on for weeks or longer.

Oh, I'm very glad to hear it wasn't the children...usually their carers are very watchful and it did sound strange that they would be allowed to cause so much damage without anyone trying to rectify it....you should put a claim into Barclay's Bank Head Office for the damage caused by their employees and see where that gets you...it might teach them to be more considerate in future...big hugs to you, and I really can understand how depressed you must have been on first finding it...glad though it's nearly back to what you had before...

Jenray I'm also glad that it wasn't the children. However I got an email from the school's head teacher soon after I posted this entry which is saying something different again!
He's also made a very generous gesture so I won't be pursuing the matter.
I'll be doing another follow-on entry at the weekend telling all.

Mr F I am so sorry - what a mindless state of affairs. Adults, bank staff: who authorised them to do what they did? You should not only be awarded compensation for damage to your property but also for the distress and additional work you have been required to undertake.

I'm glad someone worked well on your behalf in this ridiculous situation. I am also really glad that it wasn't the kids, but what role models have they got...

Have a look at my reply to Ellie and Jenray's comments!
I must say that it did mostly look far worse than it was, thankfully, apart from losing a couple of plants and various seedlings.

...have done, and I lives in a little bit of hope.

The next entry will be titled 'Call me cynical...' as I'm sure that you'll shake your head and wonder, just like I did!

Oh dear. Life is full of cynicisms, what would we do without them.

I'm so glad it turned out not to be the kids who were at fault; not that it makes the damage any easier to accept. Wouldn't you just love an audience with those volunteers?

Yes so am I, and in fact I find it harder to accept. It would be interesting to see what sort of age they are.

Yes, my thoughts exactly.
