Spitfire Women

I always treat myself to a non-fiction hardback book for Christmas.

This year it was a really easy choice to make as all the reviews for have been first-rate.

The excellent Aeroplane Monthly magazine made it Book of the Month in the December issue, rating it five roundels which equals absolutely outstanding.

Real role models - the women pilots of WWII is a very good Philobiblon review.

Although it is an aviation book it is more about the women themselves and, as such, I'm sure will appeal to a much wider readership than just aviation buffs.

I look forward to settling down sometime over the holiday period to read this book, with the help of a cup of tea and some biscuits of course!

It sounds excellent. I shall get it for my dad's Christmas present, as he has a whole collection of books on Spitfires etc. Thanks Mr F!

  It is, I've been browsing the copy we've got in the bookshop window!
  I'm sure that your dad will enjoy it, and I think that you'll probably borrow it when he's read it!

I am reading Nella Last's diaries - also another diary (Walter Mustoe) set in WW2. I might have already told you this I think...sorry if I am repeating myself

I think I might have read some extracts from this book in the Telegraph a couple of months ago. It was certainly something to do with women and 2WW aviation and made for interesting reading.

It's certainly a specialised selection of books you have picked Mr F.

There were a number of women pilots during the last war (not Spitfire pilots), who fought the Germans, who we don't hear anything about unless we come across them by accident. Those that were caught, were usually killed. I remember stumbling across someone with a surname very much like, Chaikina, a Ukrainian I think. Sadly, I can't remember her first name. I found some monchrome pictures of her being led to her death and post death ones as well. She was a proud and lovely young woman.

  It's an area of aviation history I know little about so it makes interesting reading.
  As far as I know there were only Russian women combat pilots in WW2. I know nothing more than that at present, but will undoubtedly know more in a few days!

    I wonder if 'Chaikina' will be one of the combat pilots, if not, she will have been sadly neglected. The pix I saw clearly showed WW2 Germans about to hang her from a tree.

      I googled 'Russian women combat pilots in WW2' and it came up with over 300,000 results! Somewhere in that lot is probably your 'Chaikina', which I also googled to get 21,500 results of which one or more could be about her.

        There is an awful lot we don't know, weren't told, was airbrushed out, and may never find out, Mr F. Those results, though being filterable, indicate that there is much to be researched.
