Good intentions

by MrFlighty @ Monday, 29. Jan, 2007 - 20:19:44

My promise to do proper regular, hopefully weekly, entries here has already slipped. So much for good intentions!

Friend Menhir did an entry last Thursday Lancaster Ahoy... which I was reminded of today as a friend returned a book that I'd lent him.  Tail-End Charlies by John Nichol & Tony Rennell is an account of the last battles of the bomber war 1944-45. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone who wants to find out more about this subject.

Elsewhere another blog friend, Beautifulthings, has decided that she is going to dispose of one unwanted item a day from her home and life. She is going to do a daily blog entry about this charting her progress. There is no way that I could do the same as I'm somewhat of a minimalist. However I applaud her idea so I'm going to try and dispose of one thing a week. I will, if I remember, mention it in my entries here.

Did anyone else do the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch over the weekend ?  I didn't do very well at all last year and was keen to do better this time. Sadly that was not to be as I only noted small numbers of a handful of the most common birds. Typically on Friday I'd seen two Jays at close quarters, which I rarely see hereabouts, and this morning when I went out there were several Coal Tits flitting around right outside the front door! Hopefully next year...!

FlightBuff

by MrFlighty @ Sunday, 21. Jan, 2007 - 15:55:57

was my original blog that I started nearly two years ago on 20.six.co.uk, which has been dormant for some months and was recently deleted.

I want to keep the name and have been looking for a new home for a while. I tried a few places that I was not happy with but have now gone here.

FlightBuff began as a blog to reflect my lifelong interest in aviation, but not exclusively so. What entries I do over there will continue that.

Hour of the Gun

by MrFlighty @ Wednesday, 17. Jan, 2007 - 18:06:43

is the superb 1967 western movie directed by John Sturges which is showing on Five TV Sunday at 2.50pm. It features James Garner as Wyatt Earp, Jason Robards as Doc Holliday and Robert Ryan as Ike Clanton.HOURGUN-box_full_dvd
Generally acknowledged to be historically accurate the film starts with the gunfight at OK corral and shows the moral decline of lawman Earp from upright marshall to relentless avenger afterwards.
James Garner is far better known for his lighter roles than this grim portrayal, which is perfectly contrasted by Robards performance.

If the weather isn't good then I shall probably settle down on the sofa with a cup of tea, and a biscuit or three, and watch this film which I last saw a few years ago.

I've always liked James_Garner as an actor, and don't think that I've ever seen him in a truly bad film. He stars in what is certainly my most watched film The Great Escape.

I wasn't tagged

by MrFlighty @ Sunday, 07. Jan, 2007 - 13:44:01

I am a lifelong aviation enthusiast. Nowadays my interest is very much done on here looking at websites or reading and watching TV as a sofa flyer.

I will become a greener MrFlighty as I outlined in my previous entry last Tuesday. I plan to make minor changes that will become a routine part of my life.

I want for very little in life. If I could chose one thing then it would be a garden. Flowers and vegetables would be grown, and wildlife encouraged to visit.

I see through glasses that I have had to wear since I was a child. For me sight is the most precious of all our senses, especially as I am a lover of books and reading.

I need to start using the digital camera that I bought myself a couple of years ago but have hardly used since, which is a bit silly really!

I wasn't tagged so I'm not going to tag anyone, but feel free to do it if you so wish.

A greener MrFlighty

by MrFlighty @ Tuesday, 02. Jan, 2007 - 20:37:33

I don't make New Years's resolutions but I have resolved that this year I will become greener.

In a recent entry on my Flighty blog I wrote...One important subject which will be included is climate change and global warming which is now in the news daily. This is something that none of us can ignore, or choose to do nothing, if we're going to leave a worthwhile legacy for future generations.

I shall try to include regular entries here that relate to this subject, with links to relevant websites and other blogs.

One such blog is GreenMum here on blog.co.uk. She only started it yesterday and I shall read her entries with interest. Have a read of her profile to see what she hopes to do. I'm sure that many of us can relate to what she says and some of us may even emulate her.

Here's something that we can all do. The Woodland Trust is running a national Christmas card recycling scheme from today to Sunday 31 January where you can recycle cards at all WHSmith high street stores and all major Tesco supermarkets across the UK. The cards are then pulped and made into kitchen rolls and corrugated card.
